For those looking for adventure, most travels and tours can feel routine and unexciting. Nowadays, too many places are so commercialized that the true essence of a destination either fades into the background, or sadly, completely disappears.
But if you’re willing to get down and dirty, you may just find a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here’s where Bardiya, Nepal comes in.
Bardiya National Park
Located at the Bardiya district midwest of Nepal, this is the go-to place for folks passionate about nature. The Bardiya National Park is a protected national park established in 1988, and is the largest, most undisturbed park in the lowland region of Nepal.
With 70 percent of it still covered with forests, you can bet that it’s also teeming with wildlife. Aside from forests, the park also boasts of grasslands and savannahs. As it’s not developed, you need to be cautious and NEVER wander alone. Always have an expert guide with you, as animals here are free to roam.
That’s the best part, too. Here, you can walk to your heart’s content without being crowded by fellow tourists. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a rhino or a tiger! There are also a wide variety of birds, monkeys, and elephants.
Where to Stay at Bardiya
As the Bardiya National Park is protected, lodgings inside are strictly not allowed. It’s better to book at nearby villages or in areas outside of Thakurdwara town.
If you book early, you can score affordable rooms at homestays near the entrance of the park. They will also arrange guided tours for you. Depending on the type of accommodation you get, you may get to join locals in their everyday chores, such as fishing and farming.
The best times to visit Bardiya, Nepal are during the start of dry season, which is from February to July. You can also come from November to December, but it might be cold or rainy. If you want to spot tigers, be sure to visit during the dry season as they tend to appear at watering holes.
Out of the 20+ countries that I’ve been to, I have to say that Bardiya has some of the most heart warming people I have ever met. Here are three short and sweet video I made while I visited Bardiya. Enjoy!
