As tea is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world (next to water), it’s no wonder that people are often curious about where their cup comes from. Whether you prefer it cold, hot, or iced, tea is not only delicious, it’s also healthy for you.
Believed to have originated in Southwest China, today, it’s grown across the world. From China, Japan, and Korea to Vietnam, India, and the United Kingdom, you won’t have trouble finding the perfect blend to suit your tastes.
In fact, tea plantations can be found in Asia, the Middle East, as well as some parts of North America. Some are as large as hundreds of acres in land area, others, just a couple of hectares.
If you’re already in Thailand, then you’re lucky to find one of the most picturesque tea plantations from one of the region’s largest tea manufacturers. So for those visiting Chiang Rai, why not stop by the famous Choui Fong Tea Plantation?
Choui Fong Tea Plantation
Located in Chiang Rai, Thailand in the Mae Chan county, this plantation is owned by Choui Fong Corporation.,Ltd – the largest tea manufacturer in the area. They’ve also been in operation for more than 40 years. They have another plantation in Mar Fah Luang county, but it’s smaller and doesn’t have the same amenities.
People love going to the tea plantation in Mae Chan because it’s bigger, newer, and offers a wonderful view of the green fields. They’re open from 8am to 5:30pm, but you can check out the fields before they officially open. It’s recommended to visit between 6-7am, to capture the golden sunrise as it bathes the tea leaves with its golden glow. Plus, there’s usually no one around.
There are also wooden platforms to help visitors get lovely 360-degree views of the plantation. Once the workers arrive, you can watch them pick tea leaves as well. By midday, when the crowds come, you can relax at their cafe where they serve delicious tea-based foods, like green tea roll cake and smoothies. Feel free to purchase tea bags or powders to take home, too!
How To Get There
There is NO public transport to Choui Fong Tea Plantation in Mae Chan. However, you can drive there using a car or motorbike. If you can get someone to drive you, even better.
If you’re already in Chiang Rai, simply follow Chiang Rai-Mae Sai Road until you reach Mae Chan county. Then look for Pa Sang Junction and travel to Doi Tung, Mae Salong. Keep going until you find a sign to Choui Fong Tea Plantation. After that, just follow the directions. Don’t worry – you won’t get lost!
