During your travels, you may come across ‘transit points’ – small, usually rural areas where tourists pass by on their way to their final destination.
Often, these places are not crowded and do not offer modern accommodations. Should you decide to stay, you may be lucky to find a modest hostel, or two. But in general, folks are surprised to find ‘transit points’ a charming revelation to the usual offerings.
A good example would be the quaint village of Dzhankoy in Crimea.
Dzhankoy, Crimea
This regional town north of Crimea was made famous by a Yiddish song called ‘Hey Dzhankoye!’ from the times of the Soviet Union. It tells of the victories of Jewish merchants becoming farmers in a village that was once thought to be a potential Jewish homeland.
But with the annexation of Russia, it seems that Dzhankoy may receive even smaller visitors due to transportation issues. That shouldn’t deter anyone from making a quick stop here on their way to Sevastopol or Yalta though.
It may look plain at first sight. But Dzhankoy is home to several types of industrial factories like automobile and reinforced concrete, as well as factories for meat and fabric. Aside from processing and production, there’s also wine boasting of a 2,000-year-old history. Try local cafes and restaurants to sample authentic Crimean Tatar cuisine.
There are also museums, bars, and stadiums. If you love hunting game, you can have fun chasing after geese or ducks during their hunting season.
How To Get There
As mentioned earlier, Dzhankoy is generally a ‘transit point’ for travelers. This means people rarely stay; and if they do, they can stay at what is called a ‘minigostinitsa’ (a sort of accommodation with small rooms, shared terraces and/or a lounge, maybe one restaurant, or a bar).
If you’re coming from the Crimea capital Simferopol, just take the bus or hail a taxi. There’s also a train that goes several times a day. For those coming from other countries, it’s best to book a flight from Moscow to Simferopol.
