If you’re looking for lesser-known destinations for your next vacation plans, the port city of Sevastopol, Crimea could be perfect for you.
With calm beaches, dramatic cliffs, and historical structures, it’s an explorer’s dream come true. Aside from beaches, there are museums to visit, mountains to hike, and of course, the quiet countryside. You may not be staying for very long, but the memories made here would be truly unforgettable.
Travel with Caution
Located southwest of the Crimean peninsula, Sevastopol has long been an attractive place not only for the military, but also for the elites and working class. Ukraine recognizes it as a special region; however, it was annexed by the Russian armed forces in 2014.
Despite Ukraine and known international organizations not acknowledging Sevastopol and Crimea as a federal province of Russia, the tension in the region remains strong. In fact, traveling here can be stressful. It used to be that one can simply cross the border between Crimea and Ukraine. But since the annexation, even citizens are having a hard time going back to their homeland.
Travelers usually have two main options. One, you can take a plane from Moscow to Crimean capital, Simferopol. But if you’re passing through Ukraine, you will need Kiev’s permission before crossing the border. Many recommend simply taking the Moscow-to-Simferopol route, as it’s faster, cheaper, and safer.
Sevastopol is more than cerulean beaches and naval museums. There’s the famous Swallow’s Nest, a highly-ornamented castle built in 1912 that sits atop Aurora Cliff, overlooking Cape of Ai-Todor. Don’t forget the Uspensky Cave Monastery. Built during the 15th century, the structure was carved on the side of a cliff and is fascinating to behold. And of course, there’s the spectacular Black Sea Coast where one can lose himself it dazzling sunsets.
Road Less Traveled
As long as you secure the requirements and observe safety, visiting this quaint city with its rich naval history is definitely worthwhile. It may seem small, but Sevastopol has plenty to offer for everyone. From history lovers to beach goers, it’s one of those places where there’s ‘more than meets the eye’.
If given the chance, chart your course to this charming city in the Black Sea. Experience what it’s like to be ‘in between’.
