When was the last time you saw succulent berries on a magazine and found yourself make a beeline to the grocery to get some? Or what about those tempting cakes off a blog that has got you craving for a slice? Food photography should have that effect. With the right skills and setting, you can get people’s mouths to water at first sight.
It’s not always about an expensive camera. Entry-level DSLRs should do the trick, especially for beginners who still need to find their footing. Even a phone camera will work, as long as you’re armed with the right skills. One of the best things to always have at your disposal however, is a tripod. Invest in one and you can take those overhead and still shots with ease.
One of the more important things to keep in mind when shooting pictures of food is how to make it look real and almost within your reach. In this case, a bit of imperfection helps. Say you’re cutting cake for a shot and several crumbs fall out. Don’t brush it away just yet. Look through your lens and see how it makes the cake all the more delectable.
Details matter. Everything from the cutlery, the tablecloth, to the plate, all add a subconscious effect on the viewer that you may not be aware of at first as a photographer. It pays to be prepared before the food comes out. Pick out the cutlery, tablecloth, and plates you will need for the shot.
Props help, too. Want to make that tart look homemade? Add fruits to the side for an authentic feel. Need to make a picture appear like it’s autumn season already? A few dried leaves here and there should do the trick. Always carry several props with you. You never know when you will pass by a beautiful food stall or a fruit garden.
