Did you know that the earliest forms of boats have been found to exist as early as during the Neolithic Stone Age? That means man has had the urge to explore the seas for the longest time. According to archaeological findings, the first boats looked like canoes, with a hollow carved out from large tree trunks.
Today, we have sea vessels of all kinds. There are small boats used by fishermen or indigenous tribes. Then there are massive ships, able to carry both people and cargo across oceans. And of course, there are luxury boats such as yachts, that were built for entertainment and for leisurely exploring the seas.
Boats symbolize man’s thirst for exploration. Long before we were able to shorten the distance through aviation, man has been sailing the seas looking for new land, spices, or adventure. In fact, some of the best stories in literature were about sailing or the mystery of the deep.
The most well-known of course, is Moby Dick by Herman Melville. It tells of the obsessive captain Ahab and his quest to get revenge on the giant sperm whale they nicknamed, Moby Dick. Then there’s the sci-fi gem 20,000 Leagues under the Sea byJules Verne. In this classic, a professor, a master harpoonist, and his faithful servant join a crew to find a mysterious sea monster, which turned out to be an advanced submarine created and piloted by Captain Nemo.
And who could forget films? From Poseidon, Titanic, to Pirates of the Caribbean, boats have played a major role not only in pop culture, but also in helping mankind discover its world. Imagine yourself a captain when you browse through these gorgeous free boat photos.
